Assembly Committee Moves Bill About Privacy Concerns Of Vehicle Data

Mar 23, 2023

The Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, today, advanced legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Kevin J. Rooney to address growing privacy concerns related to vehicles that collect data including GPS locations, phone records, passwords, and other sensitive information, putting consumers at risk for potential identify theft.

Asm. Rooney’s bill (A4723) requires dealerships to offer to delete personal information from a motor vehicle computer system and then remove the data prior to reselling or leasing the car.

Many consumers are unaware that some of their personal information may remain stored in their vehicle. One technology company estimates that 88% of used cars for sale retain at least some of the previous owners’ data.

NJ CAR will continue following A4723.
