Earlier this week, the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee unanimously advanced legislation that would require motor vehicle inspection facilities to provide written notice to vehicle owners detailing all open recalls applicable to their vehicle at the time of inspection.
The bill, sponsored by Senators Patrick Diegnan and Gordon Johnson, would also require the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) to provide the same notice at the time a vehicle is being registered or when the registration is being renewed.
Under the bill, S359, the MVC and motor vehicle inspection facilities would provide written notice at inspection or registration, whichever is applicable, of all open recalls on the motor vehicle. The written notice would include a description of each open recall and a statement that each open recall may be repaired at no cost to the owner under certain circumstances.
The aim of the bill is to ensure consumers are informed about issues regarding the safety of their vehicles, as well as their right to have the vehicle fixed at a franchised new car or truck dealership at no cost to them.
The bill now goes to the full Senate for a vote.
