URGENT URGENT URGENT!!!!!
NJMVC has just advised NJ CAR that dealerships must start collecting the new EV Registration Fee on August 23, 2024. The EV Registration Fee for 2024 is $250 and increases $10 per year, until 2028, when it will be $290.
The EV Registration Fee will be processed the same way that dealerships process the regular registration fee. Both the EV Registration Fee and regular Registration fee will be pooled together.
NJMVC had previously advised it would be invoicing customers for registrations that occur prior to the date it implements the fee. Therefore, NJMVC will invoice customers for sales that occur up to August 22, 2024.
Dealers must start collecting the fee from customers on August 23, 2024.
The EV Registration Fee is collected on an accelerated basis, just as the regular registration fee is collected. For initial registrations of new vehicles in 2024, dealerships will collect $1000 as the accelerated EV Registration Fee (2024-$250 x 4 years). For initial registrations of used EVs, the dealership will collect the current fee for that year (2024 – $250). The yearly schedule for the fees is as follows:
- $250.00 EFF. DATE 8/23/2024 – EXP. DATE 6/30/2025
- $260.00 EFF. DATE 7/01/2025 – EXP. DATE 6/30/2026
- $270.00 EFF. DATE 7/01/2026 – EXP. DATE 6/30/2027
- $280.00 EFF. DATE 7/01/2027 – EXP. DATE 6/30/2028
- $290.00 EFF. DATE 7/01/2028
REGISTRATION TRANSFERS: Dealers are reminded that, in many situations, a customer can transfer their existing registration from one vehicle to another. In this case, customers are not charged an accelerated 4-year registration fee and will not be required to pay the 4-year upfront EV Registration Fee. Therefore, the customer will pay the registration transfer fee ($4.50 or more depending on weight class) and will only be required to pay the regular registration fee and EV Registration Fee for one year when they renew their registration.
If dealers have questions regarding the Registration Transfer or its fee, please contact NJ CAR Motor Vehicle Operations at (609) 883-6330.
If dealers have questions about this topic or any other questions, contact Greyson P. Hannigan, NJ CAR’s Director of Legal & Regulatory Affairs at (609) 883-5056 – ext. 340 or, via email, at [email protected].
