It is with a profound sense of sadness that we report the passing of former NJ CAR President, Charlie Walton. Charlie worked for nearly 30 years at NJ CAR, first as a staff member and later, for 17 years, as the Coalition’s chief executive.
Charlie was a brilliant and very capable association executive. He was especially creative in developing many of the valuable member service programs that sustain NJ CAR. He had a unique gift for being able to take a room full of fierce competitors and get them to see their common interests, and work together as a team to improve the franchised auto retail industry in New Jersey. His impact on the Coalition has been tremendous.
Charlie was a lifelong New Jersey resident. He was born in Hopewell, grew up in Lawrenceville and raised his family in Pennington, where he served two terms on the Pennington Council, including two years as President. When he retired in 1997, the family moved to Bay Head, New Jersey.
Charlie was involved in a variety of professional, civic and social organizations. He was a past president and member of the Trenton Club, past member and trustee of the Bay Head Yacht Club (BAYC) and former trustee of the BHYC Foundation. Charlie was also awarded the Distinguished Service Citation by the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1995.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy, who was every bit as much a part of the NJ CAR family as Charlie was, as well as his son Edward (Ned), his daughter Nancy Daniels, his sister Penelope, his brother Jonathan, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Family services were private, but contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Charlie’s name to The Charles E. Walton/NJ CAR Charitable Foundation. Please forward your contributions and/or condolences to The Charles E. Walton/NJ CAR Charitable Foundation (856 River Road, Trenton, NJ 08628). NJ CAR will forward messages of condolence and aggregate donations so the family can direct all contributions.
Please join NJ CAR in offering our heartfelt condolences to Charlie’s family and friends.
