NHTSA Odometer Disclosure Rule Revisions Effective January 1, 2021

Dec 30, 2020

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a new rule in 2019 that set out minimum odometer security and authentication criteria. The rule also amended the “older vehicle” odometer disclosure exemption, which will impact dealers as of January 1, 2021.

Starting January 1, dealers must provide odometer disclosures for any vehicle from model year 2011 to present. The disclosure mandate continues for the next 10 years so, in 2031, dealers will need to provide odometer disclosures for any vehicle dating back to model year 2011. Only motor vehicles 20-years-old or older will be exempt from the odometer disclosure rule.
