The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has authorized the issuance of new Temporary License Plates on the new temp tag paper with security features and has issued notification to New Jersey Law Enforcement to begin the transition from the current plain white temp tag paper to the new NJMVC mandated temp tag paper.
The new temp tag paper will not be available for purchase from NJ CAR Services until September 1, 2024. Law Enforcement has been put on notice to expect to see both the current and new temp tags on vehicles, as both will be valid at the same time for a limited period.
Dealerships should pay attention to the following critical dates:
September 1, 2024 – The new tamp tag paper is available for purchase from NJ CAR Services.
October 1, 2024 – The last day that initial and second temporary license plates can be issued/printed on the current plain white temp tag paper. (Temp tags are valid for 30 days).
November 1, 2024 – Temporary license plates can only be printed on the new temp tag paper with security features. Law Enforcement will be enforcing the new temp tag paper starting on this date.
The new NJMVC-mandated temp tag paper, with its added security features, is more expensive than the current temp tag paper. Many dealers still have a supply of the old temp tag paper and are encouraged to deplete their supply. NJ CAR Services still has a limited supply of the current, less expensive temp tag paper, and dealers may continue to use this option until October 1, 2024.
NJMVC has mandated that dealers must use their individual Dealer ID number when ordering temp tag paper. For example, a dealership group ordering for 10 dealerships must use the Dealer ID number for each individual dealership and specify the amount of paper for each individual dealership.
To order the new paper, old paper or both, dealerships should contact their NJ CAR Services Representative (Rich West (609-403-7581) – [email protected] or Rich Trabilsy (609-403-7582) – [email protected]) or contact NJ CAR Services directly at (609) 447-5700.
If dealers have questions about this topic or any other questions, they should contact Greyson P. Hannigan, NJ CAR’s Director of Legal & Regulatory Affairs at (609) 883-5056 – ext. 340 or via email at [email protected].
