U.S. Appeals Court Upholds 2012-2016 Fuel Standards

Jul 24, 2012

The U.S. Court of Appeals recently upheld the Obama Administration’s ability to limit greenhouse gas emissions, including setting 2012-16 fuel-efficiency standards and tailpipe limits. The three-judge panel dismissed challenges brought by several states and major industries. In 2010, the Obama Administration finalized 2012-16 tailpipe emissions limits and fuel economy requirements, hiking fleetwide standards to 34.1 mpg by 2016. The Administration is currently working on finalizing the 2017-2025 standards, which may raise fleetwide standards to 54 mpg by 2025, if they are approved as they currently read.
